Synopsis
Author Roland G. Usher wrote this book in 1915 and theorized that the victor of the conflict in Europe would turn their eye towards South America and whether we were morally bound to defend South America. A well-thought out book that discusses various topics such as; THE SUPREMACY OF THE SEA / SOUTH AMERICA AND THE WEST INDIES HISTORY 7 OUTLOOK / THE SUOREMACY OF THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE / OUT PRESENT STRATEGIC POSITION / EUROPEAN POLICIES AND MOTIVES / THE REDISCOVERY OF SOUTH AMERICA / PROBABILITIES OF GERMAN AGGRESSION / POSSIBILITIES OF ENGLISH AGGRESSION / RIGHTS OF NEUTRALS / JAPANESE EXPANSION AND THE PACIFIC / PREREQUISITES OF PAN-AMERICAISM / FALLACIES OF PAN-AMERICAISM / LACK OF ECONOMIC MUTUALITY / THE SHADOW OF THE PAST / ADMINISTRATIVE AND LEGAL PROBLEMS / SOCIAL OBSTACLES / DEFENSIVE WEAKNESS / THE FUTURE OF PAN-AMERICAISM / CONCRETE ISSUES / THE PREREQUISITES OF INDEPENDENCE / THE ECONOMICS OF EXPANSION / THE ETHICS OF EXPANSION / THE EXPEDIENY OF THE MONROE DOCTRINE / THE ARGUMENT OF DISARMAMENT. A must-read for any history buff. It's incredible to read such a book talking about the times whether America needs to worry about Germany & Japan. Author Usher had his eye firmly towards the future, for instance on page 198 he states " We are distinctly inviting reprisals and armed opposition by persistently advancing claims which the Japanese cannot admit consistently with their national honor as they conceive it. Unless, we are prepared to recede from such positions as we have taken, a conflict with japan is only a question of time.". Fascinating historical book written in 1915.
